Nicholas Hall

Nicholas Hall is an emerg­ing wood­worker based in Atlanta, GA. Orig­i­nally from Virginia, he majored in Studio Art with a concen­tra­tion in paint­ing at the Univer­sity of Virginia. When Nicholas first started making furni­ture in 2023, he mimic­ked the works of design­ers like George Nakashima, Sam Maloof, Wendell Castle, and others. Much of his work from this time repre­sents a strug­gle to find his strengths, a process which involved fusing multi­ple styles and inte­grat­ing new tech­niques into exist­ing designs. As the work progressed, the pres­ence of design shifted to the pres­ence of iconog­ra­phy. The pres­ence of Christ in his most recent work connotes iconog­ra­phy in its most explicit form, accom­pa­nied by images of digital medi­a­tion, linguis­tic symbols that form words and images. The combi­na­tion of histor­i­cal forms, icons of Christ, gothic carv­ings, and rusti­cated wood, with comput­er­ized patterns that consti­tute new methods of commu­ni­ca­tion, end in work that is reli­gious but disqui­et­ing. Nicholas is contin­u­ing in this direc­tion, concep­tu­al­iz­ing new work that incor­po­rates increas­ingly digital methods of expres­sion into his chosen medium of woodworking.
