- About
Gideon Holdgate has always worked with his hands, rooting from helping his dad as a scallop fisherman on Nantucket Island, and spending his summers as a preservation carpenter and handyman. After a few years learning under an inspiring wood shop teacher in high school, that would push him to go above and beyond gluing up simple cutting boards, Gideon enrolled in MassArt’s Sculpture program with a focus on fine woodworking to progress his skills in furniture making. Throughout the course of his undergraduate studies, Gideon designed and built furniture pieces and wooden sculptures that would go on to sell in galleries across Nantucket and Boston, as well as in the annual MassArt auction. During his time as a student, and continuing past his graduation, Gideon worked as a wood shop monitor and instructor and both the Harvard University Carpenter Center for Visual Arts, as well as in the wood shop of MassArt. Gideon has since moved back home to Nantucket, MA, where he is developing his own shop space to continue building furniture and sculpture by commission.
