David Fleming was a subsis­tence hunter living in the Alaskan wilder­ness 300 miles from the nearest road when he was offered the oppor­tu­nity to study with James Krenov in 1984 for two years at the College of the Redwoods in Cali­for­nia. After return­ing to the Arctic, he relo­cated to Arizona in 1993 where he set up shop making furni­ture and teach­ing hand tool wood­work­ing skills. He currently teaches at the South­west School of Wood­work­ing in addi­tion to offer­ing private instruc­tion. He joined The Furni­ture Society in 2000, served on the Board of Trustees from 2003 – 2006, received the Steffi Dotson Service Award in 2019, and has been a website volun­teer and member of the Commu­ni­ca­tions Commit­tee through 2021.
