David Fleming was a subsistence hunter living in the Alaskan wilderness 300 miles from the nearest road when he was offered the opportunity to study with James Krenov in 1984 for two years at the College of the Redwoods in California. After returning to the Arctic, he relocated to Arizona in 1993 where he set up shop making furniture and teaching hand tool woodworking skills. He currently teaches at the Southwest School of Woodworking in addition to offering private instruction. He joined The Furniture Society in 2000, served on the Board of Trustees from 2003 – 2006, received the Steffi Dotson Service Award in 2019, and has been a website volunteer and member of the Communications Committee through 2021.
