Woodworking, Quilting and Gender: Quilting with Veneer

Demonstration

Friday, Jun 27 4:15 – 5:15 in Nancy Cantor Warehouse

Quilting and woodworking are two crafts with history’s rooted in societal gendered norms. I explore the overlap between these two crafts through parquetry, a woodworking technique utilizing veneer to create geometric patterns. In my work that using this technique I reference historical quilts patterns. Through this work I explore my relationship to both gender and craft. While demonstrating my process of making veneer quilt blocks step by step I will discuss how historically gendered crafts impact the relationship between gender and work.
