Photogrammetric Digital Carving

Demonstration

Saturday, Jun 28 10:45 – 11:45 in Nancy Cantor Warehouse

The proposed demonstration will provide an exploration of my particular blend of digital design tools and woodworking processes. It will focus on the approach to digital carving that I have developed over the last 15+ years. The demonstration will focus on three core techniques: Rhinoceros modeling software, photogrammetry, and CNC carving, each of which plays a crucial role in my work.

First, we will explore Rhinoceros (Rhino) modeling software, which is central to the creation of intricate and precise 3D digital models. Attendees will observe the design process, including the use of Rhino’s NURBS modeling capabilities to craft complex geometric and organic shapes suitable for wood carving.

Next, the demonstration will cover photogrammetry, a technique used to capture detailed 3D scans of objects or surfaces. I will show how high-resolution images are processed to create accurate digital models, which are then imported into Rhino for further refinement. This section will highlight the utility of photogrammetry in both preserving the texture of natural forms and enabling the seamless integration of scanned objects into the digital design process.

Finally, the demo will showcase CNC carving, where the digital models created in Rhino are translated into physical works through computer-controlled machinery. I will walk through the process of preparing the CNC machine, loading tool paths, and carving the wood to bring the digital design into the tangible world.

This technical demonstration will offer valuable insights into how digital tools can be used in a contemporary woodworking practice. It will provide attendees with valuable practical knowledge of contemporary methods in the field.
