My design process — these draw­ings are all for the award-winning Thread Chest. The process begins by meeting with my client to discuss the details about the piece that I’m being commis­sioned to make. I sketch ideas, then go to my drawing board where I work scaled sketches to play with the overall propor­tions of the piece. All the while, I think about the details, in this case inlays and carv­ings. The mid-sized scaled draw­ings in the photo show the incor­po­ra­tion of the carved vines on the legs on the legs that appear to be growing onto the sides of the case (the carved onlays).
