Sharon Mehrman Sketches

My design process — these drawings are all for the award-winning Thread Chest. The process begins by meeting with my client to discuss the details about the piece that I’m being commissioned to make. I sketch ideas, then go to my drawing board where I work scaled sketches to play with the overall proportions of the piece. All the while, I think about the details, in this case inlays and carvings. The mid-sized scaled drawings in the photo show the incorporation of the carved vines on the legs on the legs that appear to be growing onto the sides of the case (the carved onlays).
