Maine College of Art & Design

Portland, ME

The Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) is located in the heart of downtown Portland, ME, just streets away from Casco Bay. The College is celebrating 140 years this year (1882 – 2022). Matt Hutton founded the Woodworking & Furniture Design program at MECA&D back in 2004 due to a growing interest in the discipline.

Since 2004, MECA&D has graduated students each year within this discipline and continue to produce students that significantly contribute to the field of craft and design. Our students have participated in residencies and workshops across the country and teach at universities, schools and institutions. In addition, they have created their own businesses, lead design and build companies and contribute to the creative economy within so many different communities.

We hosted a very successful FS conference in 2012 and have had students attend the conferences nearly every year. MECA&D is a small, private college that has been able to remain nimble through recessions, pandemics and other worldly changes to remain a strong and vibrant institution that offers a unique faculty/student ratio in an environment that is unmatched by similar and even larger institutions.
