A partnership with A Tiny Home For Good and Syracuse University

Craft for a Greater Good has joined forces with A Tiny Home for Good to explore the power of a well-furnished home. A Tiny Home for Good is a Syracuse-based non-profit addressing homelessness by providing housing as a first step. Together, Craft for a Greater Good and A Tiny Home for Good, will lean into the vast knowledge of the Furniture Society members and students at the SU School of Design to design basic starter furniture to fill A Tiny Home for Good homes.

The Furniture Society is in the process of documenting this program and we’re pleased to share the first of a handful of small clips letting people see inside the process of this program partnership in Syracuse.

Daniel Frawley of inMotion Media will be working with us to produce a full length piece, documenting the program and its history, using Syracuse as a case study.

The Furniture Society would like to thank A Tiny Home For Good, Zeke Leonard, Syracuse University School of Design, Marissa Brown at Stickley Furniture, and our funders: Maxwell Hanrahan Foundation and the Sara Little Turnbull Foundation for their generous support of our program.

Alex Alois

Alex Alois joins The Furniture Society as our Local Resident Fellow in Syracuse. Alex comes to us from our community partner, A Tiny Home For Good, a nonprofit with the mission to end homelessness in Syracuse, where he works as a maintenance specialist ensuring tenants feel safe, comfortable, and supported in their homes. His role keeps him closely connected to the organization’s mission, and he continues to build relationships and pursue work that strengthens communities, supports individuals, and improves places people live. His interest in building and craft began in 2019 when he converted a mini school bus into a camper — designing and building everything himself, from cabinets and shelving to a custom-fit bed. That project sparked his hands-on curiosity and appreciation for thoughtful, functional spaces. As the Local Resident Fellow, Alex will now serve as the liaison for this collaborative project with Syracuse University, helping guide the development of a simple, affordable dresser that can be built on-site, built to last, and built with intention — with the goal of having it become a meaningful, everyday part of every tiny home for good.
