Wood and Pigment — Engraving Wood with Color with Jason Nemec
August 20 & 27, 2022
12:00 — 2:00 PM ET
In this workshop, Jason Nemec will demonstrate surface techniques for wood that He has discovered over many years of research and trial-and-error. These are the techniques he returns to again and again. These are the product of deliberate efforts to build rich and unusual surfaces, while always reserving options to push them further. We’ll look at how dye, pigment, wax, shellac, milk paint, bleach, and glue can be used with surface texture, to create color-filled line-work for jewelry, turnings, home décor, and small sculpture. There will be a big emphasis on the decision-making process so that you can chart your own course, and make your own discoveries which you can then bring back to the group!
You’ll learn about light fastness, durability, and compatibility of finishes, “drawing” with surface texture, custom mixing of Earth pigments, building a quick French-polished finish with all-natural shellac, layering with milk paint, and how to capture and remember the details of an improvisatory process, to be able to repeat it and stretch it further next time. Oh, and we’ll have a lot of fun!
