25th Esherick Competition

The 25th Annual Wharton Esherick Museum
Woodworking Competition and Exhibition

2018 Theme: Stools

THE CHALLENGE
Wharton Esherick's three-legged stools are some of his most iconic pieces. In the 1950s, Wharton began forming scraps of wood whose grain was too interesting to burn as firewood, into the seats of stools. No two were exactly the same; he shaped and sculpted each seat to whatever form the wood grain suggested, always keeping comfort in mind.

To celebrate 25 years of the Woodworking Competition, we are revisiting the challenge of the stool. While Wharton may have considered his three-legged stools "bread and butter" pieces, highly affordable at $25 each, each one is a unique work of functional art, and therein lies your challenge for 2018.

There is a $30 entry fee (for up to three pieces). Deadline for entries is July 1, 2018. For complete details see:

FS18 – Call for Proposals

The Furniture Society presents:

Annual Conference: June 13th - 16th, 2018

LOCATION: Dog Patch Studios, San Francisco, CA

We invite proposals for panel discussions, presentations, workshops, and demonstrations on the theme of the conference.

Whether it's the deployment of new technologies, the blur between "art", "craftsmanship" and "design", the rapid evolution of marketplace and business models, or shifts in consumer preference and taste, we find ourselves in a time of rapid change that is shaping and altering the context for making and designing furniture and objects. The Furniture Society's conference, Nexus, explores the many ways in which Art, Design, Craftsmanship and Technology connect, compete, crossover, and blend together in contemporary furniture and object making. We are approaching this theme with an eye on the future and uncovering the opportunities and potentials within these changes.

Deadline for submissions: January 15th, 2018 (more…)
