Profile of Virginia Birchfield

Virginia blends materials such as wood, metal and concrete which are integrated into sculptural pieces that can be functional or simply aesthetic. Her workshop is located in rural Knox County, Ohio where her wood is salvaged from locally sourced trimmings that are cut from decomposed or naturally fallen trees. She draws inspiration for her designs from the character of decay and deterioration and captures these processes by slicing or carving into, to reveal the unique beauty of each piece of wood. 'My work is about the harmony that happens when you juxtapose raw organic shapes with sleek geometric forms. It's about balancing the materials and the beauty in the simplicity.'
